Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a safe, regulated primary healthcare profession, recognised by the NHS, that specialises in the diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal conditions and their wider impact on overall health.

Osteopathy is a drug-free, non-invasive form of manual therapy that aims to enhance overall health by improving the function of the musculoskeletal system.

Through gentle manipulation, mobilisation, and massage techniques, coupled with exercise prescription, osteopathy supports the body’s innate ability to heal and maintain balance across all its systems.

Is osteopathy safe and regulated?

Yes. Osteopathy is a statutorily regulated healthcare profession, formally recognised under the Osteopaths Act of 1993. The title ‘osteopath’ is legally protected, meaning only those who have successfully completed an accredited course and are registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) may practise under this title in the United Kingdom.

To remain registered, osteopaths must demonstrate ongoing professional development each year. Patients can expect the same level of care, confidentiality, and professional accountability as they would when visiting a doctor or dentist. As primary healthcare practitioners, patient safety is our foremost priority.

What should I expect to happen during my initial appointment?

Your initial appointment will begin with a detailed consultation. Your osteopath will take time to listen carefully to your concerns and gather a comprehensive case history. This includes not only your current symptoms, but also any relevant medical background, past injuries, or lifestyle factors—allowing for a holistic understanding of how your body functions and whether osteopathic treatment is suitable for you.

You may be asked to perform simple movements or orthopaedic tests to aid in diagnosis, and the osteopath may also use gentle palpation techniques to assess the condition of your muscles, joints, and other tissues.

Based on this assessment, your osteopath will explain their findings, offer a clear diagnosis, and outline a personalised treatment plan. Treatment is typically provided during your first session, and you will often receive guidance on exercises or lifestyle modifications to support your recovery between appointments.

Depending on the nature and severity of your condition, a short course of treatment—usually five sessions—may be recommended. For longer-term or chronic conditions, ongoing support may be advised, with treatment frequency tailored to your goals and progress.

Should an undiagnosed medical issue be identified that falls outside the scope of osteopathic care, you will be referred promptly to your GP or another appropriate healthcare professional.

Is osteopathy painful?

Osteopathic treatment is generally not painful and is often experienced as deeply relaxing. At times, patients may feel what is commonly described as a “good pain” when working through areas of tension or restriction. Your practitioner will maintain clear and ongoing communication throughout the session to ensure that any discomfort remains well within your personal tolerance and comfort level.

Will I feel sore after treatment?

It’s not uncommon to experience mild soreness or a sense of ache for up to 48 hours after treatment. This temporary discomfort is a natural response as the body adjusts to changes in joint and muscle function. During this time, gentle movement and everyday activities are often encouraged, though you may be advised to avoid strenuous exercise, depending on the nature of your treatment.

“I saw yasmin today for my first appointment. I had a bad experience with an osteopath in the past but I’m so happy to say that this was not the case with Yasmin. She is amazing very good at what she does and knew the problem straight away and started treatment. I’m feeling loads better, looking forward to my next appointment ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️”
